Cool stuff on the Internets & Thoughts on Social Media landscape
Hello everyone, TC here.
If you are a new subscriber to the Cap & Trade Newsletter, welcome! This newsletter covers the NFL salary cap and news across the league with additional coverage of the Houston Texans. I have been covering the Houston Texans since 2012 as credentialed media, and have been working at OverTheCap.com for the past 7 years. I hope you find this newsletter informative and digestible. I do subscribe to a number of paywall-type websites for data sourcing and aggregation, but always looking for more sources. While this newsletter remains free, you can donate to the cause here to at the button below:
Welcome to the latest edition of Cool Things I’ve Read & Watched.
I subscribe to various publications and newsletters across the wonderful world wide web. Some are free and some are paywalled. When I run across an interesting or informative article/blog/newsletter/podcast/YouTube show, I generally just share it on my Twitter timeline.
I want to highlight the work of others, and share them with you.
If anything is paywalled, I will indicate as such below.
Cool Things I’ve Read This Week
The Playcallers Podcast
By: Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic
I still have one episode left before finishing the series. This podcast series has been a fascinating peek into the mindset of NFL coaches, specifically within the Kyle Shannahan & Sean McVay coaching trees.
Why star NFL running backs have been devalued: What's next
By: Bill Barnwell of ESPN
The rare non-paywalled Bill Barnwell article explores the concept of devaluation of the runningback position. Many you read/listen to my work know I am not much on paying big money to runningbacks. Which is vastly different than investing heavily into runningbacks. Bill’s ability to articulate the intent of his articles is always welcomed; along with the history lesson of the position included.
An NFL linebacker quit football to sell Pokémon cards, now he’s making millions (paywall)
By: Zak Keefer of The Athletic
Zak Keefer recently joined The Athletic and has been welcomed addition for my reading. Zak is an excellent story teller. This article on Blake Martinez, former NFL linebacker, turned Pokemon card trader is wild to say the least. If you are a 90’s kid, you can probably relate to this story on some level.
Who makes the cut? Projecting the Texans' 53-man roster to open the 2023 season
By Brooks Kubena/Jonathan Alexander of Houston Chronicle
Training camp for NFL teams is just under two weeks ago, so prepare yourself for 53 man roster projections. Of course I need to include local colleagues Brooks Kubena and Jon Alexander’s initial projection report. For the most part, 90% of the Houston Texans roster is set. But there are some last roster spot battles that will be fun to watch at training camp.
Expanded Addition Thoughts on Social Media
The landscape of social media has become increasingly difficult. Trying to manage multiple accounts/apps is becoming increasingly difficult. I’ve always been a die-hard Twitter user and nothing else. My biggest following comes from there.
Now we have Threads by Meta. Still in the infancy stage of their respective social media life. I am trying to embrace the new app, but find it difficult until new enhancements are added. Chronological Timeline and web browser access are my two main complaints.
Currently I can upload my visuals, newsletter links, and thoughts to Twitter via web browser TweetDeck. Who knows how long I’ll have access to TweetDeck if it indeed becomes a Verified User access tool. (I feel like a Twitter Blue Check is in my near future). On top of all that Twitter’s algorithm is burying tweets with Substack links in them. I’ve seen different authors try different methods for tweeting their respective newsletters.
But then to do the same on Threads I have to download images to my phone and create TinyUrl’s to get the same info posted over there. Instagram is a whole other animal with no web link processing.
Suffice to say it is very frustrating, and I am still trying to determine the best path forward. I get it…nothing is perfect…but this is current landscape lacks fun.
That’s it for Cool Things I’ve Read & Watched edition of the Cap & Trade Newsletter. If you have an article or video that I should check out you can leave a comment below, post in the chat room, or send me an email Troy@Overthecap.com.
