Cool Things I've Read & Watched - Week of June 26, 2023
Cool stuff on the Internets
Hello everyone, TC here.
If you are a new subscriber to the Cap & Trade Newsletter, welcome! This newsletter covers the NFL salary cap and roster construction across the league with additional coverage of the Houston Texans. I’ve been covering the Houston Texans since 2012, and have been working at OverTheCap.com for the past 7 years. I hope you find this newsletter informative and digestible. I do subscribe to a number of paywall-type websites for data sourcing and aggregation. While this newsletter remains free, you can donate to the cause here to at the button below:
I wanted to test out a new series addition to the Cap & Trade Newsletter that I am hoping to distribute weekly or semi-monthly. If you enjoy this series, please be sure to subscribe, like, or leave me a comment below.
I subscribe to various publications and newsletters across the wonderful world wide web. Some are free and some are paywalled. When I run across an interesting or informative article/blog/newsletter/podcast/YouTube show, I generally just share it on my Twitter timeline.
Why not share the same information with you! The subject matter shared will be primarily football related with other topics sprinkled in. I share other interests in the PGA Tour, Formula 1, sports management/business, and beyond.
Additionally I want to highlight the work of others.
If anything is paywalled, I will indicate as such below.
Cool Things I’ve Read This Week
The always brilliant Jason Fitzgerald took an in-depth look at the short term and long term implications of restructuring contracts. The act of restructuring contracts has increased dramatically in the past 3 years dating back to the COVID year when the league salary cap dropped leaving teams in difficult salary cap positions.
This summer Bobby has been producing content specific to the San Francisco 49ers offensive game plans during the 2022 NFL season. Bobby’s ability to break down the complexities of the NFL is fantastic. He includes schematic drawings and video to compliment the writing. Bonus for Houston Texans fans as the information could be a preview with new offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik.

Sumer Sports is a relatively new group founded by Atlanta Falcons former General Manager Thomas Dimitroff and Jack Jones. Their team continues to grow including luring Eric Eager away from ProFootball Focus to be their Vice President of Consumer Strategy.
Tej is a brilliant young up and comer in the football data world with experience in the league and with PFF. This article covers the metric of Average Depth of Target (ADOT) for quarterbacks and how it relates to Expected Points Added (EPA). This statement is a good intro:
In the current NFL, the path to having an efficient passing attack does not need to stem from throwing deep shots excessively.

I’ve been a fan of professional golf for 30+ years now. I love peaks behind the curtain at tour events, especially in the equipment trailers. The work those folks put in 48 weeks a year is amazing. This short video covers what happened when the TaylorMade trailer ran out of the short tees that Tiger prefers.

Paraag Marathe is one of the best front office people in the league not in the General Manager position. Working for San Francisco as their lead football administration for a number of years before rising to the title of EVP of Football Operations; now Marathe will extend his work into the Premier Soccer League. An in-depth article on Marathe and his history coming up in the NFL.
By: Houston Texans
The Houston Texans organization is riding a wave of excitement and optimism heading into the 2023 season. There will be 8 training camp practices open to the public. This includes one night practice, and the two joint practices with the Miami Dolphins. Hopefully you were one of the lucky fans to snag a free ticket when the system went live yesterday. I’ll be attending as many training camp practices as my schedule allows.
Cody Alexander of Match Quarters Newsletter here in Substack is a wealth of information and knowledge. The “Vic Fangio” system breakdown in this YouTube video is easily digestible yet comprehensive.
That’s it for the inaugural Cool Things I’ve Read & Watched edition of the Cap & Trade Newsletter. If you have an article or video that I should check out you can leave a comment below, post in the chat room, or send me an email Troy@Overthecap.com.
